Making Space / Conceptions of Space

DEEP DIVE: Sharing by Company Cikaros (DK)

The Danish Company will share with us the creation process of Making Space / Conceptions of Space – a circus choreographic and philosophical work on body, space, and architecture!

Drawing from modern circus and expanded choreography, two women work with a scenography consisting of two movable metal structures and a wooden box. The scenography creates spaces, and the bodies engage with these spaces.

Through handstands and circus-based movements, they improvise abstract stories within concrete, minimalist choreographies. They explore the imprint of the artist’s body in space, both horizontally, vertically, diagonally. They balance on the edge, hang from the top, lean against the corner, stand on each other.

They investigate the scenography as a prop, the prop as a space, and the space as a place. They work in the gaps and expose the spaces we might not otherwise see. Making Space / Conceptions of Space is a poetic performance about connected bodies in ever-changing spaces. A concentrated and meditative play with bodily sculptures that come to life and disappear in a constant flow.

Since 2005, Cikaros has been working on circus choreographic works where they play with a physical language inspired by various disciplines. They develop sophisticated circus choreography with physical precision and philosophical undertones, fascinated by what the circus body and choreography themselves convey in their interaction with the surrounding world.

Performers: Signe Løve Anderskov and Henriette Aarup. Choreographer: Marie Topp.
